Purchase Limits Explained
Colorado allows adults 21+ to purchase up to 1 ounce of flower (28 grams), 8 grams of concentrate, or 800mg of edible THC per transaction. These are per-transaction limits — there is no daily cap on the number of transactions, though purchasing from multiple dispensaries in rapid succession to stockpile beyond the possession limit is illegal.
Purchase limits are now equal for residents and visitors. In the early years of legalization, out-of-state visitors were limited to quarter-ounce purchases, but this restriction was removed as the market matured.
Possession Limits
You may possess up to 2 ounces of cannabis or its equivalent outside your home. At home, you may also possess any cannabis produced by your legally grown plants (up to 6 plants per adult, 12 per household).
Equivalency Standards
Colorado uses equivalency ratios to convert between product types:
- 1 ounce flower = 8 grams concentrate = 800mg edible THC
- Mixed purchases are calculated proportionally against the 1-ounce limit
Gifting Rules
Adults 21+ may gift up to 1 ounce of cannabis to another adult 21+, provided no money, goods, or services are exchanged. "Gift" schemes that require purchasing a non-cannabis item (like a sticker or art print) to receive "free" cannabis violate this provision.
Over-Limit Consequences
Possessing more than 2 ounces but less than 6 ounces is a level 2 drug misdemeanor. Six to 12 ounces is a level 1 drug misdemeanor. Above 12 ounces enters felony territory. See our penalties page for full details.
