Getting a Medical Card

  1. Obtain physician certification: A Colorado-licensed physician must certify that you have a qualifying condition and that cannabis may benefit your treatment.
  2. Apply to the registry: Submit your application through the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry (CDPHE).
  3. Receive your card: Once approved, you'll receive a medical marijuana card valid for one year.
  4. Purchase at dispensaries: Present your card and valid ID at any medical dispensary.

  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Chronic pain
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Seizure disorders (including epilepsy)
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Severe nausea
  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
  • Persistent muscle spasms (including those related to multiple sclerosis)

Medical Card Benefits

  • Lower taxes: 2.9% state sales tax vs. 30%+ recreational rate
  • Higher purchase limits: 2 ounces per day vs. 1 ounce recreational
  • Age 18+: Medical patients can be 18–20 (recreational requires 21+)
  • Caregiver option: Designate a caregiver to purchase and possess cannabis on your behalf (up to 5 patients per caregiver)
