How the Product Mix Has Evolved
Colorado's product landscape has transformed dramatically since 2014. Flower's share of the market declined from 70%+ at legalization to approximately 40%, while concentrates grew from 13% to 39%. Pre-rolls are the only category still growing (up 3.8% year-over-year), and cannabis beverages represent the industry's most exciting frontier.
Flower
Still the most popular product category, though declining as a share of total sales. Colorado flower is among the cheapest in the nation at approximately $3 per gram pre-tax. Budget eighths start at $8, and quality ounces can be found for $80–$150. Onset is immediate (1–5 minutes), duration is 1–3 hours. Beginners should start with 1–2 hits and wait 15 minutes.
Edibles
Colorado pioneered the modern edible safety standard. All recreational edibles follow the 10mg THC per serving, 100mg per package maximum established after the 2014 edibles crisis. Products are individually scored, wrapped, or marked, and stamped with the universal THC diamond symbol. Edible sales showed surprising resilience, up 16.4% year-over-year in April 2025. Onset: 30–120 minutes. Duration: 4–8 hours.
| Standard | Limit |
|---|---|
| Single serving THC | 10 mg maximum |
| Package total THC | 100 mg maximum |
| Serving demarcation | Individually scored, wrapped, or marked |
| Universal symbol | Diamond with “THC” stamped on each serving |
| Packaging | Child-resistant, opaque, resealable |
Concentrates
Concentrates now represent 39% of Colorado's market, up from 13% at legalization. Products include wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, distillate, and diamonds. THC content typically ranges from 60–90%. Concentrates are not recommended for beginners due to their potency. Onset is nearly immediate; duration is 1–3 hours.
Pre-Rolls
The only growing product category, pre-rolls were up 3.8% year-over-year in 2025. Infused pre-rolls (dipped in concentrate, rolled in kief) and connoisseur-grade single-strain joints are driving growth. Convenient, affordable ($5–$15), and ideal for visitors who don't want to invest in accessories.
Cannabis Beverages
Colorado's most exciting product frontier. Nano-emulsion technology enables 5–15 minute onset times, making beverages feel more like alcohol in their onset profile. THC-infused sodas, seltzers, teas, and coffees are available at most dispensaries. Typical servings contain 5–10mg THC. Keef Brands (Boulder, 2010) pioneered this category.
Tinctures & Topicals
Tinctures (sublingual drops) offer precise dosing and moderate onset times (15–45 minutes). Topicals (creams, balms, patches) provide localized relief without psychoactive effects — they don't produce a "high." Both categories are popular with medical patients and those seeking targeted effects.
