The Cannabis Capital of America
Denver anchors Colorado's cannabis economy with approximately 186 recreational dispensaries as of December 2025. The city that hosted the world's first legal recreational sale at 3D Cannabis Center on January 1, 2014, has spent over a decade building the most mature cannabis infrastructure on Earth.
Key Denver Cannabis Neighborhoods
South Broadway — The Green Mile
Denver's densest dispensary corridor stretches along South Broadway, earning the nickname "The Green Mile." Multiple dispensaries within walking distance, plus Colorado Cannabis Tours headquarters. This is the beating heart of Denver's cannabis retail scene.
RiNo Art District
The River North Art District blends cannabis culture with Denver's creative scene. Home to Tetra Lounge, the city's first social equity hospitality licensee. Art galleries, breweries, and dispensaries coexist in converted warehouses.
East Colfax
Colfax Avenue, Denver's historic main street, hosts Cirrus Social Club — the newest and most upscale consumption lounge. The 8,600-square-foot venue offers curated cannabis "flights," trained "flight attendants," and OpenTable reservations.
International Church of Cannabis
At 400 South Logan Street, a converted 113-year-old Lutheran church features stunning psychedelic murals by Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel and a 360-degree laser light show called "BEYOND." The International Church of Cannabis ranks among Denver's top 10 tourist attractions and operates as an "elevationist" congregation where cannabis use is considered a sacrament. Tours and events run regularly.
Consumption Lounges
Denver has three licensed consumption venues (see our detailed consumption lounges guide):
- The Coffee Joint — Denver's first, opened 2018. Vaping and edibles (no smoking).
- Tetra Lounge — RiNo district. First social equity hospitality licensee.
- Cirrus Social Club — East Colfax. Upscale 8,600 sq ft, cannabis flights, OpenTable reservations.
Mile High 420 Festival
The Mile High 420 Festival at Civic Center Park has run for 30+ years. The 2018 edition drew an estimated economic impact of $95 million. The festival continues annually, with the 2026 edition confirmed for April 20. Live music, vendors, food, and community gathering — one of the largest cannabis events in the world.
Denver Altitude Reminder
Denver sits at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level. First-time visitors often underestimate altitude effects: faster dehydration, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and disrupted sleep. These effects compound cannabis effects. Drink water constantly and start with lower doses than you'd use at sea level.
