The Basic Rule

Cannabis consumption in Colorado is legal only in two settings:

  1. Private property with the explicit permission of the property owner (this includes rental units where the landlord permits it, 420-friendly hotels and B&Bs, and your own home).
  2. Licensed consumption lounges in Denver (currently three venues — see our consumption lounges guide).

Where Consumption Is Prohibited

  • All public spaces: Sidewalks, streets, parks, trails, plazas, concert venues, restaurant patios
  • Federal property: Rocky Mountain National Park, national forests, military installations, federal buildings, airports
  • Vehicles: Open container laws apply — no consumption by drivers or passengers, and open cannabis products must be in a sealed container or the trunk
  • Most hotels: Unless specifically designated 420-friendly (violating hotel policy can result in cleaning fees of $200–$500+)
  • Common areas: Apartment building hallways, lobbies, shared outdoor spaces, HOA common areas
  • Workplaces: Even in cannabis-friendly industries

The Altitude Factor

Altitude Amplifies Cannabis Effects

Denver sits at 5,280 feet, and mountain towns can be 8,000–12,000+ feet. Altitude causes dehydration, lightheadedness, and reduced oxygen — all of which compound cannabis effects, particularly in the first 24–48 hours. Start with lower doses than usual, hydrate aggressively, and give yourself extra time between sessions.

420-Friendly Accommodations

The budandbreakfast.com platform lists 75+ Colorado properties, from budget rooms at $60/night to party mansions at $1,100/night. Dedicated 420-friendly B&Bs like the Adagio (which includes a wake-n-bake cannabis sampler) and Arrowhead Manor (a luxury property near Red Rocks with private smoking decks) cater specifically to cannabis consumers.

Public Consumption Penalties

Consuming cannabis in a public place is a petty offense punishable by a fine up to $100 and possible community service. While enforcement varies by jurisdiction, it is not a criminal offense — it will not result in a criminal record.
