Do
- Bring valid 21+ ID — Out-of-state driver's licenses, passports, and military IDs all work.
- Buy from licensed dispensaries only — Check the dispensary directory or the MED's licensed facilities search.
- Start low, go slow — Especially with edibles. Colorado's altitude amplifies effects. Begin with 5–10mg and wait at least 2 hours.
- Hydrate aggressively — Denver's altitude and dry climate cause rapid dehydration, which compounds cannabis effects.
- Consume on private property — Your own residence, a 420-friendly hotel/B&B, or a licensed consumption lounge.
- Use rideshare after consuming — Plan transportation before your session. Uber, Lyft, and taxis are widely available.
- Keep products in child-resistant packaging — Store securely, especially in accommodations with children.
- Ask budtenders for guidance — They're experienced and happy to help first-timers.
Don't
- Don't consume in public — Sidewalks, parks, trails, concert venues, restaurant patios — all illegal. Fine up to $100.
- Don't drive impaired — 5 ng/mL THC permissible inference. Wait 6+ hours after smoking, 8+ after edibles.
- Don't take cannabis across state lines — Federal crime regardless of destination. This includes mailing.
- Don't bring cannabis to the airport — TSA is federal. Denver police generally confiscate small amounts, but don't risk it.
- Don't consume on federal land — Rocky Mountain National Park, national forests, and military bases are federal jurisdiction.
- Don't assume your hotel allows it — Most hotels prohibit cannabis. Cleaning fees can be $200–$500+.
- Don't eat the whole edible — The 10mg serving standard exists for a reason. One piece, then wait.
- Don't buy from unlicensed sellers — Street purchases are illegal and products are untested.
- Don't ignore altitude effects — Your tolerance at sea level does not translate to 5,280+ feet.
Common Mistakes
The most common tourist error: eating an edible, feeling nothing for 30–60 minutes, and consuming more. Edibles can take up to 2 hours to reach full effect, and at altitude, the onset may feel different. Wait at least 2 full hours before considering a second dose.
Visitors from sea-level states are the most vulnerable. Your usual dose may hit 2–3x harder at altitude due to dehydration and lower oxygen. This is compounded on the first day or two before acclimatization. Cut your normal dose in half for the first 48 hours.
